The Montana was built in 1872 by Muir and Livingston at Port Huron as a wooden package freighter for carrying limestone. The ship foundered as a result of a fire on September 6, 1914. The wreck is located near black and white mid channel marker south of Thunder Bay Island. The wreck is upright and largly intact with the bow broken away.
